Three Factors When Learning to Play Electric Guitar

Some say that electric guitars are difficult to play but if you know the right techniques, you will be able to start to learn to play electric guitar in minutes. You have to prepare yourself for some lessons because you are about to learn many new things. If you know a bit of the lessons that you are about to encounter, you can determine your progress.

You see, there are three factors that you need to be aware of before you even start electric guitar lessons.

Number 1 Factor

Once you have the electric guitar, don't think about your worries in playing such instrument. First, you must sit down and study all the things that you have to know about the guitar's fret board. Be sure to purchase a diagram of an electric guitar in music stores and choose the one that shows the different notes. You must be able to memorize all the notes. Don't try to learn it in one day because this will be very boring.

As learning to much in one day will only led to frustration, spend at least ten minutes each day in learning the different notes while playing. Or try 10 minutes several times a day if you are ambitious and want to speed up your progress. You will not be able to learn to play the guitar unless you are able to memorized each and every note. Ninety percent of beginners achieve success because they memorized all the notes.

Number 2 Factor

Factor number 2 still doesn't involve electric guitar playing. For this part you need to concentrate on your ears. If you want to learn to play an electric guitar, you have to train your ears to listen and hear the notes. This is essential to the whole learning process. Ear training involves playing the notes and then singing it one by one. Play the note first and then sing it. Once you've mastered this, sing the note first and then play it. Determine if you got the note right. For the ear training, you can do this ten minutes a day, just like memorizing the notes.

Number 3 Factor

The final factor involves muscle memory development. Do some chromatic exercises but only the simple ones first, this is crucial. As you practice, try to incorporate scales as well. If you want to become a good electric guitar player, muscle memory development is essential. Just like the two other factors, spend ten minutes at a time every day for this activity.

These are the three factors that you should know before you take up any guitar lessons. If you are already familiar with these factors, then the upcoming lessons will not come as a surprise to you. You can learn all the guitar lessons easily.

So you see, you have to be patient and you have to devote some of your time in order to learn all the lessons in playing an electric guitar. The three factors seem very easy but if you do not put your heart into it, you will not learn anything. Concentrate and have the right attitude. Make sure that you are also motivated so that you can learn the notes or chords. If you have the right attitude, you will learn electric guitar playing in a few days.

Several minutes each day can take you a long way. By doing this, you can have fun while learning. Do not overdo each of the factors involved in the learning process. Otherwise, you will not enjoy learning to play an electric guitar. Be patient, work slowly and methodically.

Remember, you should not focus your attention to playing the guitar immediately. Memorize the notes, do some ear training, and muscle memory development.
The rest will come more easily if you follow the 3 factors.

Axe Survival Guide - Tuning Your Guitar

This may sound silly but you MUST make sure your guitar is in tune.  You can buy electronic tuners for this.  They clamp onto the neck of the guitar.  You pluck each string and turn the peg to tighten or loosen the string.  Usually a red light tells you it is out of tune.  When the light turns green the string is in tune. However I’ve included two links below to videos you can watch to tune your guitar to.
The first is standard E:  It was especially common in rock in the 70s (especially bands from the UK) to play in this key.  To play along to some albums, you’ll need to tune to this key.  It starts from the 6th string (the thickest string)

The second tuning is E Flat, which is more common in the US, and has become more popular by most rock and metal bands worldwide.  On this video the person marks it as G Sharp, which actually is the same as A Flat (don’t worry if that doesn’t make sense, just tune the strings until is sounds the same)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8QkIs6eNa0

So, just pluck the open string and turn the tuning pegs until the two sounds sound as close as possible.  You may need to go through the whole process twice to make sure they are all still in tune.
Be patient it takes time to learn how to tune your guitar.

What is your guitar playing style?

This will help you develop your own style of guitar playing.
When you learn to play guitar, you have a lot of fun, and it feels great when all the hard work finally leads to fruition…I spoke to the point where you can play  songs like you were the one who wrote them.
But the big question is how can I get your own style?  It would be a pity you sounded like the rest of them.
You can consider that there are 2 different ways  to develop your own unique sound.  1... you can choose to sound like your favorite guitarists… but meshed together.
Think all more great guitarists you listen to and put them in a large casserole. You can combine your favorite aspect of each of your favorites,  then you can add your own spin on them.
To do this, you must be resolutely open. You'll start playing like guitarist you love  and master their songs, their licks their solos, riffs, trails and everything.
Subconsciously you'll pick up on it and it will become your own… you may not realize it is happening, but it is.
The next part is to put your own spin on it.
Therefore, running in the process of mastering your favorite guitarists, you might decide to stroke your collection in a way that makes the tone somewhat different?
Listen to guitarists in a wide range of styles and then decide if it can be included in your own style.  Guitarists "borrow" style all the time… even across the country, blues, rock, jazz, classical, and heavy metal.
Be sure to start to create your own "bag of tricks". You will begin to see this bag of tricks is composed of all guitarists different styles, you've been listening to for a number of years.
The second way is to develop a sound and style all your own.

Learn to Play The Guitar

Learning to play guitar is a serious business that you should take lightly. Once you have a little physical hands-on experience with the guitar you can relax and make choices about what style of music you want to learn and how you want to learn it. Once you have learnt the basic chord shapes and how they can be moved up and down the fretboard, you can experiment with strumming patterns. When you feel comfortable with strumming  you can start on learning a few finger picking patterns. You must never lose sight of the goal of personal satisfaction behind your musical efforts.
Part of learning to play guitar is, unfortunately, the wondering. “Which way of learning to play guitar is the best for me?” “How many ways of learning are there?” Are books the best source of guitar learning information? Or is it better to pick some of my favorite songs and concentrate on learning how to play them?
What makes learning guitar more confusing is the fact that everybody who learns seems quite happy to have taken the path that they took and, in hindsight, would not have done anything different. Anyway, maybe talking to friends who already have been through the learning journey would probably be a good start. Did they learn to play by starting on chords? Or scales? How do people feel about their abilities as a guitar player after a few years of fooling around in a non-disciplined way?
Many guitarists have made their way by watching and talking to friends and making use of the free tabs on the internet. Choosing tabs should be a fairly stress-free job if you are guided by your personal musical tastes but there could be a problem with learning from friends. If you have a bunch of friends or family members who think they know a thing or two about playing the guitar, you are talking to someone who may or may not be aware of their own limitations.
A guitar playing friend can show you how to play a chord or a riff but they will have only limited ability to provide you with the guidance you need to chart your own guitar learning path and to judge your own progress.
If you do take the unstructured route for learning guitar, you can always take a lesson or two from a professional teacher just to make sure you haven’t acquired too many bad habits and to help with charting a course for your guitar music progress.
One experience you could do well to share with a guitar teacher is learning from a printed guitar tutor. If you choose one of good guitar lesson books you already have a structured learning program and sharing the learning with an experienced guitarist who can add his own perspective to the info in the book.

Learning To Play

Your priority when trying to learn to play the guitar should always be to find the highest quality instruction available to you. This can be the prime factor in how easy you find it to learn and consequently how likely you are to succeed. It is not recommend that you attempt self instruction as this often leads to frustration in the future.  You will develop bad habits that will be difficult to break and will prevent you from playing more difficult music in the future.

Having a Tutor
A good way to learn is to find a good local tutor although this is not always possible, and it can be very expensive.  In addition classes may not be at a convenient time or location.  Before starting lessons from a tutor it is best to get references from former students.  A good tutor should gladly provide you with contact info for former students.
Online
If tutoring is not possible there are some great online sites to learn to play acoustic guitar but choose wisely and be sure to try out their sample lessons first. You need to make sure that the pace and which they teach, the style and level of the lessons are suitable for you.
The ideal situation is to have a combination where you learn from a variety of different sources simultaneously. For example, 1-1 lessons with a real tutor plus online guitar lessons or books and DVDs. You'll need to be self motivated and committed to daily practice which not everyone is  but assuming some kind of inspiration is driving you to learn acoustic guitar everything should be fine!
One of the most popular questions asked by beginners is How long does it take to learn? I would say that normally its around 4 to 6 weeks before you can strum along to basic beginner songs. This assumes you're being taught a good quality method for guitar and possess an average aptitude for the instrument.  However learning to play the guitar is a never ending journey which you'll probably never reach the end of no one ever does!
Practice
Along with high  quality guitar lessons the most important will be in knowing how to practice correctly. Practicing is a technique you have to learn! Learning how to practice correctly will shorten the time to takes you to learn to play acoustic guitar enormously, it may even mean the difference between success and failure.  You will need to devote time everyday to practice,  and that means 30 to 60 minute everyday.  If you can handle more, you will benefit enormously.

Buying A Guitar

Now comes the big decision,  buying your first guitar? If you are looking for a guitar to impress your friends with your perfect guitar solo? This article highlights eight ways to make sure you buy the best guitar to suit your needs.

Buying a Guitar Tip 1

You must ensure you buy the right type of guitar for you and to ensure the guitar is the one that suits your style of music.

The four standard Guitar types are as follows:

Acoustic - This is the guitar that can play anywhere and requires no amplification. The acoustic guitar strings may have steel or nylon wound.

Classic - This is an acoustic guitar that has existed for a long time, the guitar is made with a wide neck.

Electric guitar: This is the type played by many modern bands and requires a high amplification for anyone to hear the sound .

Acoustic / Electric: This is an excellent alternative that can be played with or without amplification.

Buying a Guitar Tip 2

When you start looking for a guitar it is easy to choose the first guitar you see in a store and buy it. You must ensure that you resist the urge and walk around and try different guitars until you are satisfied with your selection.  Talk to the sales staff and they can help guide you. There are a number of bundle deals where you can get free accessories  when you buy your guitar package offer these cheaper than buying them separately and give you an excellent starter kit.
Be sure to wander the local shops and guitar  stores on the Internet, you can get products wholesale and packages that gives you a bag, tuner, strap, picks, strings and even guitar lessons on DVD. Perfect as a starter kit.

Buying a Guitar Tip 3

Make sure the guitar you buy,is the appropriate size to fit you. You can buy guitars ¾ or ½ size will be ideal for children. The electric guitar and a nylon string guitar is the perfect choice for a beginner and will be less painful on you fingers.  As your finger tips become more calloused, it is less of a problem.

Buying a Guitar Tip 4

There may be some really cheap guitars that you find on the Internet or your local guitar shop, you might think would be the best solution. I tend to stay with the best known manufacturers. This will ensure you get a quality product and good service too.
A cheap guitar will be difficult to play, have terrible sound and probably result in you giving up before you have really given it a fair chance.
Just like most things, You Get What You Pay For.

Check the next post for the next 4 Tips.

Five Steps To Learining To Play Guitar

Are you having trouble starting to play guitar?
Do you never seem to master the basics of playing the guitar.
Want to be able to play the guitar so you can impress your friends and colleagues?

This article reveals the five essential steps to start playing the guitar.

Sitting Position. To feel relaxed when you're sitting playing the guitar, you have to adopt the correct sitting position. Take your guitar and  ensure the body of the guitar  supported by your leg. Make sure you are sitting on the edge of your seat and your back straight but relaxed. Your guitar should be tilted toward you a bit.  This alone will start to make learning and playing the guitar easier.

Standing Position. When you play guitar in the standing position you need to ensure that your body is relaxed and the guitar is held securely.  Take your guitar and put the strap over his shoulder. The strap should be adjusted so that your guitar is at approximately  waist height.  Your left hand will support the neck of the guitar and your right hand on the bridge of the guitar. These easy steps will ensure you are relaxed and have control of the guitar.

Hand position. In order not to cause tension or strain on your wrist or thumb, which can cause injury, proper hand position is essential. Wrists and hands should always be in a state of relaxation to avoid stress. The thumb should never be placed too low on the neck. The fingers should be positioned on the fret board and make sure you do not have to stretch to play any of the strings.

Fretting. To make sure you press the strings on the fret board correctly, here are some important tips. Keep your nails cut short, long nails will make proper fretting impossible.  Only the tips of your fingers should press the strings against the frets.   Proper contact between the finger tips and the strings will produce a clear clean sound that is not muted and without buzzing.

Holding the Pick.  The pick is the contact point between the strings and your hand, and needs to be held correctly.  Hold the pick between the thumb and the index fingers.  Held correctly it will produce a clean clear sound when you strum it against the strings.

The next post will cover the basics of  purchasing the right guitar for you.
